The Soviet Union was a Communist state and they were actively spreading Communism. Commies should be shot but we shouldn't go to other countries and do it, we have enough here that need a bullet in the head.

Vietnam war was supposed to be war of attrition and a cold stop just like Korean war but a presidential change extended it in order to out manufacture the Russians and Chinese and prove they'd use the weapons on anyone (Cambodia). This was Kissinger's idea, btw

The way we fought Vietnam is simply how you lose a war to an authoritarian unyielding oppoent, period. Attrition is you don't take advantage of the frickin' attrition, is stupid and a failure strategy. Namely to say... if you stand on a hill, and people attack the hill, it doesn't matter if you have frickin' gattling laser beams and your enemy are club wielding rock throwing cavemen, if you don't get off the fuckin' hill, and cut the tap of whatever is sourcing these damned constant cavemen that are attacking, then eventually, one day, an endless trickle/horde of cavemen are going to take that fuckin' hill away from you and you're going to lose.

That's Vietnam. We dicked around the South playing a retarded attrition game of get the high score for it's own sake, against authoritarian commies that refused to give a shit how many illiterate peasants died they threw at us, and then hippies whined and then we lost. Despite however many upteen million we slew of the fuckers to relatively little casualties ourselves. Because "kill the ideological extremist sociopath's mooks until he gets bored" is never a winning strategy. He won't get bored.

The US not only killed more Communists than vice versa, but the US had strategically decimated them -- especially with the Tet Offensive. The Communists even admit the Tet Offensive ruined them.

However, people at home didn't like kids being sent off to war via the draft, so they wanted it to end.
