Roadtripped from Colorado to Nashville once, I never realized how lush that part of the country is. TN was pretty comfy, but Nashville looked like it was going the way of Denver. At least it had live bands instead of DJs at its bars though, that was pretty nice.
I've always wanted to do a BBQ tour and hit most of the Southern states en route to all of the BBQ capitals (yes even Memphis...). And Kentucky is definitely a state I'd like to explore more

Sadly I haven't got to explore Virginia as much as I'd like but I did get to make a pilgrimage to George Washington's Mount Vernon once. Beautiful property and getting to sit on Washington's back porch and look out at the Potomac River was a great time. Was only missing a glass of tea.
Memphis isn't as bad during the day. Definitely be inside a building at night though. Damn good BBQ and sights just don't decide to live there.

"North" and "south" poorly describes the war in some regards. Part of my ancestors were southern unionists in the Union Army, part in the Confederate Army, and some stayed neutral.
Went last year. I haven't fully confirmed it but I believe a distant cousin was an Alamo defender. Supposedly one of my ancestors died in a flood at Galveston too though I've yet to find his grave if he even has one.

I lived in Memphis for a couple years and visited the General's grave and statue. It was a blessing and I ended up having to clean up some bullets where someone shot at it. Some of my Confederate ancestors rode with Forrest. Some distant relatives were unionists who were sent to Andersonville by Forrest. Forrest resented unionists long after the war. The Klan was meant more for attacking unionists than niggers but that part of history has been mostly forgotten. A little fun fact is one man Forrest sent to Andersonville later became a brigadier general for the Union Army. After the war he ran for House of Representatives and won. Forrest was highly concerned the man would use his power as general and later Rep to punish him and his men for sending him to Andersonville but he didn't and in fact pushed for leniency for secessionists and wanted Tennessee to reunite as one people again. Forrest was actually surprised by this and ended up respecting him some for it.
The melungeons mostly kept to themselves though the mixed race people of the south had various names that varied from state to state. I know older melungeons to this day still deny they're part black even after scientists DNA tested them.
Whigs broke part. Northern Whigs became the Republican Party and southern whigs the Constitutional Union Party. The Democrats were also divided and broke apart into two candidates. The Republicans basically carried the northern states and grabbed a lot of electors in the process while the south was splintered between the southern Democratic candidate and the Constitutional Union candidate.

I think there's some truth to it which RINOs like to ignore for >muh party of Lincoln, but that it's greatly exaggerated. The birth of the modern Republican platform was with Barry Goldwater's campaign in 64, followed by those of Nixon (which the Republicans are conveniently never the party of), and looking back further, primarily on the economic policies of Calvin Coolidge (who unfortunately hasn't been cited by major political figures since Reagan); the Dems began much with FDR, but had their platform cemented by LBJ's fiscal and social policies

My particular county has voted Republican ever since the end of the Civil War so I'll leave it out. In terms of the south in general the switch is partly true if only in that the Democrats stopped catering to the south and the Republicans swooped in on this. Though the loss of George Wallace was the end of southern Democratic populists. It's pretty undeniable though that the Republican Party of Lincoln's day is nothing like the Republican Party now and same for the Democrats.
