Does not surprise me at all. I suspected that this study would create exactly this kind of situation.

If this correlation is proper and legit it is quite huge. But please, I would most likely need a few days, maybe even weeks for finding out as much as possible about these listed SNPs. My work schedule atm is horrendous and my brain feels like it is slowly turning into mush (switching into industry, fuck academia!).

I'd prefer a soft eugenics approach btw, in-vitro fertilization with genetic screening of the embryos, implanting only those with the best possible gene combination from both parents. Worked with CRISPR and in its current form it is still kind of a hit-or-miss thingie.

Ok, the first on the list (rs708913) is within a phospholipase gene (PLCB1). Should check now if it affects amino acid sequence or is 'silent mutation' (then it may actually affect other genes by being an overlapping regulatory site).
Though phospholipases could play a role in cell membrane composition and that is important for neurons (eg. the 'lipid rafts' where neuroreceptors are preferentially anchored)

Ok would have to REALLY work into its interactions but already know it is strongly expressed in the brain and sure does affect signaling between nerves in a way.

rs7963801 (the one with the crazy peak) is a synaptotagmin gene, a calcium sensor involved in vesicle fusion for neurotransmitter release. Again, would have to check what the mutation influences exactly.

I too enjoy your contributions, DG. All this makes me think about inherent tradeoffs: we know nature likes to try many different things at once, in case the environment changes. When the MAOA story broke a few years ago, it basically highlit catecholamine throughput/turnover asymmetries in the population. It was found that the distributions of alleles with differing promoter regions is not homogenous. Specifically 4r alleles (the most active, representing the highest potential for metabolism) are most common in one supergroup, while 2r (the least active, so therefore the 'slowest' version) is more common in another. 3r being somewhere in between. What intrigues me is that 4r people, while having the highest innate potential to mop up neurotransmitters - which basically means their brains can 'churn' more - are also at a higher risk for anxiety/depression spectrum disorders, where their higher activity sees their brains sometimes chronically self-deplete circulating catecholamines. Although the use of SSRIs is more common in this group, that could be simply down to their cohort being more likely to be prescribed them, for various social and economic reasons. Obviously, the best approach for these folks is to maintain good nutrition and exercise, and to have something (be it work or hobbies) against which to push. Their minds need to be active. It would follow that people with slower facility to 'mop up' (turnover) metabolism may not be as capable of sustaining prolonged heavy cognition; however, they might be less likely to get 'stuck inside their heads'. This is at the cost of emotional regulation 'in the moment' though, which may be more difficult for them, but they are somewhat more protected from the downsides of chronic emotional regulation issues (anxiety, dpression).

So with this variation, we see nature trying different things, and if you have one style of MAOA, you may be 'better' at certain things, but at the risk of others. Another style might seem like a disadvantage, but there's a kind of protection that comes with it.

Where the fur is one colour, one parent's gene is expressed; for another colour, it's the other parent. Women carry two copies of the MAOA gene: might it be possible that expression is distributed in tissue? If a woman's brain has some tissue structures in which her mother's MAOA is expressed, and other tissue structures in which her father's MAOA is expressed, could this help explain 'female' modes of cognition?

What happens when SSRIs are prescribed to people with slower versions of MAOA? wouldn't this result in a semi-permanent 'flood', and subsequent unmooring of emotional regulation? We know many mass shooters have histories of SSRI use. Have there been any cross-studies? Is the pharma industry aware of this? Would it be reasonable to do genetic screening?

Without going into MAOA I think one reason for the different bell curve in males is the less strict control over endogenous retroviral sequences. These 'DNA parasites' have driven our recent evolution (since apes) with their copy/paste mechanism. They are crucial for our type of pregnancy (see Syncytin gene, originally the envelope protein of a retrovirus) and are expressed from the male's genetic side only during pregnancy (they are imprinted). They do ALSO play a huge role in gene regulation during embryonal brain development (and have also been shown to increase muscle mass in male mice).

The real question here is whether those SNPs have anything to do with being white or just happen to be associated with white race. If it's the latter, you could easily say that niggers dindu nuffin, and basically have the same value as retarded whites that weren't lucky enough to get the good variants. It has been shown that the Y can do pseudo-homologous recombination with itself by palindromic sequences. It has its own backups as it cannot recombine with any sister chromosome (or brother chromosome??) except for a small stretch it shares with the X.

Yeah but the conclusion is inaccurate. Genetic distance is a little misleading in these regards. We're all just monkeys and what makes us more 'distant' from those compared to Africans IS the Neanderthal admixture we do carry ... however, the Neanderthals were not 'farther away' from monkeys than the original H. sapiens from Africa. They simply went along a different evolutionary path (judging which path was the 'better' is another story) ... so actually we're all kinda the same distance from apes but some of us in another direction. Now if you take H. sapiens as a baseline of course in relation the Africans would be closer to apes as the Neanderthal DNA gives us 'extra distance' but only from the Sapiens perspective.

The basic problem with this is that known SNPs that correlate with intelligence have very small effects. We believe that the genetic architecture of intelligence is massively polygenic like height—thousands to tens of thousands of alleles involved, each contributing a tiny positive or negative value.

Now, due to current limitations on full genome sequencing, all of the large studies are done using SNPs. But because the SNPs themselves may not be the relevant mutations, these analyses don’t work very well for other populations (like Asians or Africans), due to something called linkage disequilibrium. Basically the SNPs that were tested in a large sample of Europeans don’t have the same predictive value in other populations.

So, while I do believe there are genetic differences in intelligence between different racial groups, we don’t have the data yet to prove that.

And here I fully agree ... this is no solid evidence. It is simply a hint. But I doubt such a research project could currently be resolved without political meddling and a veritable shitstorm. Btw I'd still rather look more into personality and behaviour than pure intelligence...

Good post. There was also a study on black violence and the 2r repeat being expressed more in that group. Another interesting gene is COMT, similar but targets the dopamine derived group of monoamines. Also Y chromosome only has MAOB, with a single MAOA from X I think it gives evidence for the wider variance between male and female IQ.

When I think about this, it’s frustrating because even though we should soon have some large samples for Asian and African populations to replicate some of the GWAS work, it still won’t allow for good comparisons. Seems we’ll have to wait for full genome sequencing to become ubiquitous?

And I agree fully about personality. With so many interesting traits having at least moderate heritability, this is a huge topic.
