The Japanese are not awesome. Doing some things right while being insanely defective in others is not awesome. If their law enforcement decides to arrest you it does not matter if they had justification, or that you are innocent or guilty, the arrest itself means you are guilty and your refusing to admit that guilt is proof that you are guilty. The entire system is based on that. Their inability to admit mistakes early on and correct them ruins them. That is why they are really good at tweaking other people's inventions but not so good at ground-up inventing new things. Their space program is a joke while in the US we have had a couple of companies make better progress in a 10th of the time at probably 1% of the cost. Europe surpassed them even though they were burdened with a system of committee at all levels of the space program.

I own several kimonos, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to Japan, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Japanese as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.
