Unions

Dear Jow Forums,
I just got my crane certification, and already have my CDL with a little experience.

My father worked in a similar industry all is life and was a main leader in his union. He is telling me that I need to go union and pretty much already have a guaranteed job with one thanks to one of his long time friends. He never gets involved in my business, but this is one thing he is pushing heavily.

Should I go union? Why, or why not?

kiss your boomer dad on the cheek and do what he says user. bible jews say obey your parents. and obey other things too. but mostly obey your parents. especially daddio.
for future reference its a boxing turtle feeding forum, but i know we all get mixed up in these crazy days of moral relativism.

heil hitler and fuck white people

the canadian post office is about to strike for the 12th time in 12 years. I think unions are retarded, but it is also an expression of capitalism if we are being honest. They want to sell their labor for the highest price.

Of course. I have a friend whose brother works at the docks. He broke his leg in a work-related accident and was on worker's comp for 6 months. He was making more money while sitting on his ass all day than his entire family combined

>Should I go union? Why, or why not?
obviously yes. Daddy got you a nice comfy job through nepotism, thanks to his role in the Union.

not if you ever want to own your own crane; you know, like a man

It's this simple, you have an in. Take it. Fuck politics. If it doesn't work out, you can get a non union job later. You can't do it the other way around. (Funny but you'd think it would work the other way...)

To play devil's advocate here, I'm looking at simple CDL jobs, dedicated routes, making 80k+ a year, having nothing to do with cranes.

Why should I go to a union and make 40k, have to drive a truck, unload, operate crane, use load charts, risk shit tipping over, etc etc, when I can just be comfy in truck making shit ton more money?

Not to mention, doesn't the union basically own you once you're in?

I consider myself pretty conservative, and most definitely a hardened racist. Aren't unions mostly liberal and can threaten your pension if they find out you're not in with their beliefs?

oh yea, and not to mention have to be bitch boy for 3 years.

>Why should I go to a union and make 40k
Benefits, pension, and the ability to work anywhere. Of course with CDL you can probably find work anywhere, but all the union guys I know when there is no work locally can always get put on a big project somewhere (oil pipelines, power plants, hospitals, casinos, sports stadiums, other major construction).

Unions take very good care of you.

>Aren't unions mostly liberal
Not the rank and file from what I've seen but the union machines rally behind Democrat party. Keep your fucking mouth shut about religion and politics on the job. That and don't fuck anybody you work with should be common sense.

Things that never happened for 800.

There's nothing comfy about driving for 20 straight hours because you have to meet a deadline

I'm talking, Mon-Fri home every night for good companies.

Not SWIFT or CRST bullshit, but the comfy dedicated routes for experienced and safe drivers.

On the east coast a lot of jobs are union only, so yes go union.

Unions can also shaft good workers, because they end up carrying all looser and dead weight members.

This.

yes OP, if you are a real worker with a real job then you belong in a union

don't let autists convince you to sacrifice a powerfull class ally and sabotage your own interests. get your union card

I would evaluate the union and determine if it's a good fit.
Are you planning on making a career out of crane-operating? If so going union might a solid plan as it gets you a pension and healthcare.
I'm in a trade guild and for the most part it's pretty good, some bones to pick with the knuckleheads at my local office but other than that the amount of money I make on a union job versus non-union is considerable; non-union is usually about half the rate of union.

>Should I go union? Why, or why not?

Thing about unions is that they kind of force you into being with them or they'll fuck your shit up. I personally hate them, because unless you're the top end of the union, it's a racket. It's essentially a bunch of workers coming together and threatening a business with their collective power.

I was in a union as a temp. They took my money and in return they actually took my job when it became permanent and I couldn't do shit about it. I hate unions with a passion, but in many circumstances, you gotta play their game or they will fuck you.

Here's what I suggest: if you can avoid it and still make good money, don't unionise. If you can't avoid it, then join the union and pretend to be the biggest shill for them. Oh, and never talk shit about the union with other union members, or anyone else, really. These people love the squeal.

>Has the opportunity to benefit from nepotism.

Well yeah, so long as you're not a faggot and it doesn't come with a million strings.

>On the east coast a lot of jobs are union only
>east coast
>implying

I will only work in the South, southwest or midwest. Fuck east and west coast.

I appreciate everyone's replies, and still playing devil's advocate here.

If you hate school and want a decent and simple life Union jobs rock. You will feel like people give a shit about you if you do your job. You always get paid well and the benefits rock.

What other user said, benefits, pension, job security and injury compensation. You may earn more as a truck driver but then you: have no say in your hours, pay for everything medical out of your own pocket, get replaced if you fuck up once. It's about more than just money. I'm in a union, vote conservative, and hate niggers. People at work know about this, union hasn't done anything to me. In fact, my union defended me when I got cut doing some stupid bullshit that the company wanted to discipline me for.

Good reply, again, devil's advocate:

>benefits
Name one benefit a fortune 500 company will not offer me.

>pension
401k? Roth IRA?

>job security
If the economy takes a shit, everyone will be hurting. What makes unions special?

>injury compensation
Doesn't every company offer disability insurance/worker comp?

>get replaced if you fuck up once
What if you're an apprentice and fuck up, or even a full union member and REALLY fuck up. Won't the union still terminate you? The union can't even protect your CDL/NCCCO getting pulled?

>"right-wing"
>openly support the banding together of workers for the purpose of extracting (blackmailing) more value from employers than their shitty jobs are actually worth
This board is full of hyporcrites.

What do you do for a living?

Ya you idiot, I was making chump change non union, was barely living paycheck to paycheck and now I clear 6 figures,

What local btw, I’m in nj

Landed nobility.

Mind if I ask what status (if you're being serious)?

New money equivalent.

Go union because otherwise you'll never get a job in a union shop and union shops pay well, just get ready to deal with the neediest most entitled people you'll ever meet.
