They know perfectly well that the FBI will not investigate state crimes, especially from 36 years ago, but it makes great headlines and they can frame the whole situation as Kavanaugh and the republicans trying to silence this brave doctor (they always make sure to refer to her like this for extra credibility points) who simply wants justice. It also puts most republicans on defense, as they are scared shitless of being branded misogynists and they bend over backwards to accommodate Ford.
