That isn't what is happening at all. Do you even understand what this issue is about? It's the EU that is demanding that. The UK meanwhile is constitutionally unable to have Northern Ireland separated from on customs terms.

Quite honestly, I would actually have made the British negotiating team an independent expert team. Then the UK parliament should have had the chance to vote on the negotiation outcome and from the start it should have been legislated that in case they rejected the deal, the UK leaves with no deal.
The British PM and government should not have ever been involved in this.

The UK is constitutionally committed to open border with Ireland as a result of the Good Friday agreement.
It is an international treaty which trumps domestic law. This is why the Remain campaign said it was not easy and Boris was lying.

well, the thing is that the million who want to stay in the Uk happen to be the richest group, and have access to guns... the civil war that would probably result would be very nasty, and likely that the losses on both sides would be heavy, but a border would still exist at the end of it/ Even if the UK said we cont want you, it would be an independent, tiny, broke and nasty, Ulster statelet, and demanding EU help and UN peacekeepers, and insisting the Queen was still their Queen, fuck the Westminster traitors.
it is hard to say which way the border itself would move. there is a fair chance that west belfast would be razed and ethnically cleansed, but Derry would go the other way. South armagh and fermanagh might be subsumed into Eire (after an ethnic cleansing of Prods) , but anywhere north of Banbridge would be swept clean of catholics.
at least, that is how I think it would go, for now. The peace process has been going on for so long that almost all young protestant and most young catholics don't care much about the border anymore, and if peace prevails for another twenty years the situation would be a lot different. But for now the apathy would would soon change if the South invaded. the Loyalist organisations would vastly outnumber the republican ones, and be faster to act, and the innocent, unarmed and peace loving catholics would be just trampled over along with their more violent armed struggle minority.

apart from anything else, the south does not want the north. to much trouble. certainly not enough to go bankrupt in a war for it, and not enough to have to withstand international condemnation. no Irish mainstream politician would ever think of going to war for it.

middle class catholics often say they would vote for an independent ireland, but when you talk with them they all know where the butter on the bread comes from, and they would vote for the Union.
I agree, this could of been done and dusted by now if we had people in charge who actually understood that 'staying half in and half out' was never an option from the start and negotiated from a position of securing a post break deal rather than both parties trying to ask the other to break its own conventions to please the other.
