Went to Moscow & St Pete's this summer. Loved it. The exchange rate is great, food is great. They make tasty burgers, it's the rage there. The burgers are really good. Had very good ribs too. I would go again.

Do it user. Just go to major cities where they know there'll be tourists if you dont know much of the language. Most Russians actually like Americans. If you carry a english-russian translator most people will happily read off that and try and help you if youre looking for a place. BUT, do NOT dress like a burger. wear dress shirts and have any family dress appropriately, if you dress like a slob on vacation most people will look down on you, appearance is still held to some value there. Unless you have a month or two ahead it will be very hard for you to learn the language necessary to navigate around (there are no supplementary english signs, although some restaraunts have english menus if in touristy places.) Definitely try to go out into the country as well, the birch forests are beautiful. St peters is great for culture and beauty while moscow is more political history, but both are full of history nonetheless. Maybe write down some key phrases and sentences on your phone/a piece of paper. Be prepared to see 3/10 guys with 10/10 girls.

As for cities, I've been to St. Petersburg and Moscow. Felt a thousand times safer there than in any of the nigger infested cities that I've visited in the US.

Now this is a real issue. It's hard to realize for Russians like myself, but Russian cities are really not very tourist-friendly in terms of things being translated or at least transliterated, and the further you are away from the big cities, the fewer people will speak English. You wouldn't want to learn Russian to any meaningfully useful level for a week long trip, but one thing that will definitely come in handy will be spending a couple hours of your time to learn Cyrillic (if you're not a total idiot, that wouldn't take you longer) — you will not magically be able to understand the language, but you sure will recognize words like ПOЛИЦИЯ, TУAЛET, ФЛЭT УAЙT, or ABTOБУC.
