Maybe most of them lived in ghettos, but not all of them. The happy merchant meme is used not because its just funny. Merchants were usually very wealthy people, upper middle class or something compared to today.

I think a lot of their success lies in their merchant background and the switch to capitalism that made them part of the new elite class.

Actually the Jews were still a fairly elite parasitic class in Europe for centuries. That led them to being chonically kicked out by the angry peasants they were oppressing. But at the same time the Polish-Lithuanian aristocracy welcomed them with open arms and that's where most Jews would live until WW2.
