Why would anyone think we're a homogenous nation? The population is only 5-6 million and there's over 1 million English people living in Scotland.
One amusing thing i've noted about English people born in Scotland though, is that that they tend to completely adopt the Scottish identity, the whole support anyone but England is sports, etc, even though their parents are English, it's really quite hilarious.

It was taken by force but by the Scots, the Norse lived in the extreme North well before the Scots came over from Northern Ireland to what was then Northern Britannia. Everything on that map was eventually taken over by the Scots. Hence why the largest part of our DNA on average is Irish.
The majority of Glaswegians are Scots though and of Irish ancestry. My fathers side of the family are from Glasgow or the Glasgow area, the surname is only really found there but the origins trace back to Antrim in northern Ireland. My mothers side of the family are all in the North East, are Clan Ross, and also can be traced back to Northern Ireland.

my father is mostly german and my mother is ~half scottish, swedish, and english. i've always been interested in the scottish part of me for some reason. the people, accent, land and structures of scotland has always fascinated me more than my other ethnic roots.

Depending on which part of history you're talking about, I think you might have that backwards. The Gaels likely arrived to Iberia at the very end of the paleolithic (potentially triggering the end of it, according to some) and stormed up through the Isles, subsuming the Picts and other "indigenous" Celts along the way.

It's not a Germanic or Viking male lineage accounting for 1/5th of the DNA in Ireland and Scotland, I'll put it that way.

(Anyone interested in this stuff who hasn't checked into it in the past couple of years is encouraged to. Findings this very year have called into question whether Gaelic culture had much to do with gallic celts at all.)
