PSAs are known to have a barrel life that can last easily 6000+ rounds, compared to $1000 ARs which barrel life is maybe only a few thousand more. 6k+ is well more than enough for most gun owners as long as they dont go to the range every other weekend.

To change out the barrel, you're going to need a good bench vice, something substantial to mount the vice on, an upper vice block, a bench block for doing the gas block roll pin, a real barrel wrench (regular armorers tool is going to slip and fuck up your barrel nut), and serious fucking upper arm strength. This isn't a cheap hobby, but you have the right idea starting out with a basic bitch PSA. Shitty taiwanese wolf .223 ammo is a-okay for plinking and shooting at paper. get some buffalo bore or black hills for SHTF.

Depends on the legislation passed but even when automatic weapons were banned from sale there was not a confiscation of the ones currently in possession.

Ive been trying to pick out my own build. Even going "bare minimum" Any AR I build will wind up being ~$900. There are things I would just should never cheap out on. if you want an AR heres how it typically goes-- serious cheap ass? build a PSA. they are decent for the money. or spend a little more and get a prebuilt M&P II or opt to build a PSA with a CHF barrel which are made by FN, however other parts tend to be on the cheap side (good where you need them to count though). $800-1000 will get you a plain jane military grade AR. Colt, Windham Weaponry, Spikes ect. you dont get anything fancy, but are made to get the job done and last. $1100-1600 gets you into the BCM's, Danial Defense and FNH's. if you want an all around rifle that you can take into Afghanistan then this is what you go with. the BCM Mid 16 Mod 0 is a great value. anything more than these and you start to run into seriously diminishing returns which unless you got money to burn arnt really worth it.
