I am not a christian. I enjoy and take inspiration both from christian and pre christian culture of my country and the wider continent. It would be great if there was somewhere a pocket of actual European paganism - a community where the tradition is unbroken, not "reconstructed" or "interpreted" but geniuine. A community where you are born into a clan that still worships the gods of nature as they farm and hunt. Not an internet - assembled lifestyle for white atheists, which is what all neopaganism I've seen amounts to.
I won't even comment on burgers wearing thor's hammer in LA and claiming they "connect with their ancestors" because they watch Varg vids and go to black metal concerts.
But even in Europe I find neopaganism unconvincing LARPing. Look at Romuva. Its true that the Balts were the last to be christianized. Its true that a lot of pagan tradition survived in one form or another in folklore, which coupled with scarce written sources on Baltic paganism gives us some idea on what they might have believed. That's it. Even the name Romuva is taken from a XIV cent Teutonic chronichler who propably made it up for effect as archeologists found no trace of any "pagan pope and his giant temple" and the monk was likely projecting his catholic mindset on the pagans about who he knew nothing and just sat in some castle and wrote. And now "Romuva" is a name for the biggest neopagan organization in the baltics. Even they make most of that stuff up mixing christian sources, archeology, folklore and a lot of making shit up into a "religion" that might or might not look like the things balts actually did. Nobody can say for sure what would real baltic pagans make of Romuvans, maybe they would mock them for being deluded retards.
