At that point, they knew that it didn't matter what happened in the actual war--- as long as they just held on, America's Left would defeat America because a house divided cannot stand, and the big voices had lost heart.
The lesson learned from Nam, for the Americans, was to control every image taken of the fighting. And that lesson stood the US well, until Afghanistan and smart phones.

Had the military been allowed to deliver a finishing blow to the Vietnamese for example after the failure of tet offensive and there would be no communist Vietnam. Instead they've had rules of engagement that tied their hands everywhere.

The vietcong put up a better fight than anticipated, akin to what happened decades later in Iraq where the "war" ends up being against a nebulous network of guerilla forces rather than a discrete army, to a point where the conflict dragged on longer than intended.

The media reaction/protests started not because of the war per se, but because the Vietnam war was the first to have video and photo documentation of all the nasty bits: i.e. civilian executions, war crimes and so forth.
