It was a largest christian cathedral in the pre-medieval and medieval world.
Then it was an orthodox-christianity cathedral after 1054, as it was in Constantinople, the capital of eastern christianity (together with the Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem after the Rome broke away from the church).
In 1204 - when western christians sacked Constantinople - it served as a western-christianity church
Then again, after the restoration of Byzantine Empire in 1261 - it served as Orthodox (eastern) Christianity church.
Then in 1453 it was turned into a mosque after the fall of Constantinople to osman barbarians.
Then, after ataturk reforms after WWI - it was secularized (as the whore Turkish state) and converted into a museum, as it is now
But voices were raised numerous times already that it should be turned into a mosque again, and that fucked erdogan is sure as fuck to do it at one point.
