Meritocracy being a fair system is the biggest lie that we have been told all our lives. I too believed in it for a long time before I realized it’s inherent faults. In a society which divides people based on specific unchangeable metrics, there is bound to be few groups that are continuously privileged while the rest are continuously discriminated. Encouraging a meritocratic society increases inequality wherever it is applied.

The biggest downside of meritocracy is that it is an equality of outcomes and not equality of opportunities. It rewards one group of people who promise good outcomes and continuously keeps rewarding them whenever the expected outcome is realized. These rewards come at the expense of not providing equal opportunities to the group that got left behind at the start of the cycle. All the inequality in the world- race, caste, gender is rooted in this false concept of merit.

Also, in the US, the problem is simple. Those who legitimately rise through the merit system stack the deck so that their children and grandchildren have an edge over everyone else. They do this without malicious intent.

Success means earning more money and living in a wealthier neighborhood. Living in a wealthier neighborhood means paying higher property taxes, which in turn pay for better schools.

Once it is clear that school A is better than B or C, everyone with kids wants to live in area A. The cost of housing there rises, and before long you have housing segregation by class and grossly unequal schools.

School A gets a reputation for being superior, giving graduates an edge in admission to the best colleges and universities. When these kids graduate from college, they get the best jobs, make the most money, and move into the wealthiest neighbors.

Anyone arguing against a meritocracy is, at the end of the day, arguing against St the existence of hierarchies and value differences. Anyone arguing against that is erasing the inherent differences in people that cause them to be better or worse at certain things. Sometimes these differences make them better at certain things. Furthermore, to say that meritocracy is a bad thing is to say that the differences between people are bad, and should be removed. Well, how do you do that without making a value judgement on which aspects of someone are good or not? Still out of this shitty of a school we had kids with perfect GPAs, who did extremely well on the SATs, and they all got nice scholarships that are letting them go to nice schools.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the smartest guy out there, but I managed to get good enough grades that I can go to college without needing to take out loans.
Meanwhile the kids who instead of focusing on academics went out drinking and partying all night are now the ones who are bitching and moaning about how the system let them down and needs to be changed so that they can have all the same perks that we worked for.
