The need to believe in an Architect stems from members of the organization requiring something to be able to place the weight of your trust into in order to secure you with the knowledge and privilege of becoming a Freemason.

It really is just for the conversation and coffee, really. You'll find people when traveling who will treat you like family when they recognize you as a member, it's pretty great. Everyone should treat each other with this much warmth as a standard, but obviously we don't live in that kind of world.
Being able to check out any lodge of where I'm located is also pretty neat. I joined in one state and frequently stop by my home-state's lodge located near my hometown whenever I go to visit.
Outside of the lodge? Nothing much. There's other groups for pretty much every role you could look to fill in society, Freemasonry is really for self improvement purposes.
