I used to live there. Mostly attributed to two things:
>1. The unincorporation of the city government from the county government.
>2. White flight.
A long time ago, St. Louis was the second most populous city in the US after Chicago. A ton of rich people actually lived in the city.
As time passed the city expanded, and the surrounding counties started to populate, but it was mostly farmers. The more populous city people asked why their taxes were paying for the stuff needed by the people outside the city. The city became its own tax base, excluding the county.
Eventually in the 70s people started moving en mass to the suburbs. The 80s AIDS epidemic apparently hit STL very hard as well.
Most white families live in suburb towns to the west of st louis

Fun fact: the largest land owner in the city is none other than St Louis University, which started buying up parcels as land values dropped. Housing really only started to pickup in the city starting in the early 2000s.
Fun fact 2: the movie the Exorcist was based on events that occurred in one of the older St Louis University buildings.
Fun fact 3: East St Louis (Illinois) is even worse. It was there that Escape From New York was filmed. It’s even worse than STL.

Saint-Louis suburbs are probably worse then Eastern European suburbs, but you haven't seen Western-European suburbs yet. Just visit a Parisian suburb to see what a real ghetto looks like.

My buddy from rural Missouri used to commute to the city for construction jobs and he's been charged with 3 separate hate crimes. Nigs are always trying to start shit with him even though he's 6'4" 275lbs.
Once at a gas station some blacks ask him what block he's from. He just laughs at them. Goes back to his truck and they follow him out "yo white boy I said what block you from?" and he pulls out his gun from the truck and points it at them. The brandishing charge was increased to a hate crime because he kept calling them niggers.
