You have to understand Russian interests in Syria, as well as the power and dependency of the factions. Russia wants only one thing, safe military bases, which they figure require for the moment that Assad stay in power. It wants to avoid conflict with Israel, which has a powerful army and ally (the US), and has large Russian population and many business ties - clandestine and otherwise.
Israeli meddling has until now not been on such a level that it posed a real threat to Assad. The Syrians, meanwhile, are too dependent on Russia to demand that they defend them as allies, or the alliance is over. Syria has to take it on the cheek and Russia can tolerate that.
