He used a natural water channel that flowed through part of his property, blocked it off, and used it to fill his reservoir. That can do irreparable damage to so much wildlife. With all the money they save on water they start buying up land for the sole purpose of collecting rain. Now, with all this rain being collected and not going into the ground where it belongs, the water table starts to shrink. If you know anything about water tables, this is permanent and a really bad thing. So, because the water table is shrinking the bedrock its in starts to become unstable because where there was water for support now there is nothing. This leads to sinkholes and other bad shit.
Its even worse in deserts. Take all the water and presto, no more desert. Just dry, hot wasteland.
