Oh I'm sure he knows what's going on here. He's just an arrogant slimeball who has been waiting his entire life for this moment and has decided that he's not going to back down and will do whatever it takes to get on the court, even if it means having all of the other women he's hurt come forward and call him out and ruin his life.
Any lawyer will tell you that the facts make the case. A rapist is a rapist and those chickens will come home to roost no matter what you do or how great of a legal mind you are. The best possible thing to do in his situation is to withdraw his name as soon as possible to make this all go away. But he didn't want to do that. He'd rather throw his entire life away, and his family under the bus in the hopes of possibly achieving his goal. Hell, he's even betraying his party by doing all of this. With each passing day the window to fit someone else in before the new term(where it's becoming increasingly likely that Dems could take both houses) becomes smaller and smaller.
I just feel sorry for his kids. I wonder, will he bring his daughters to this hearing tomorrow like he did with the past hearings? Show them how democracy works? If they don't know already, some day they will know the truth about their father, and it will probably crush them. And it didn't have to be that way. He could have put his family first and curbed his ambitions. Nobody would have known any of these things about him had he simply declined the nomination in the first place. He knows what he did. He knew this was a risk. Yet he took it. And unfortunately he has left damage in his wake. And as fate would have it, the biggest victims of this are once again women: his wife and daughters. This guy is can't seem to help himself from ruining the lives of females. Way to go Brett. Way to go.
