you can get a 6 month multi entry visa from your home country, you can stay in the country for 2 month but extend for an extra month at thai immigration for like 1700-1900 baht, then do a border run to laos or cambodia, another 2 month with an extension then just before the 6 month mark do a border run again and get 9 months out of it, after that it's just a horrible experience of going to laos thai embassy and praying they give you a 2 month tourist visa which you can extend to get 3 months but after that the embassy hates giving you extra visas so you gotta maybe go to cambodia for a while to avoid being a repeat visa whore, you can get cheap flights in and out of thailand with like airasia and get 1 month visa at the airport and extend for 1 month which you used to be able to do unlimited times.
