My grandfather was navigator in the command section. He watched from his Lancaster as they dropped coloured smoke street by street to drop incendiary bombs. To this day it has broken his heart. He told me that they knew there were so few anti air guns and many civilians due to immigrants as the fronts moved closer. Also he said the fact Dresden was a centre of German culture too it was selected. So effect on national German morale would be devestating and also urban density made the city a good testing ground for creating firestorms with the incendiaries.

You're being wilfully ignorant. Over a hundred heavy bombers were sent in the raid on Dresden. My grandpa was one of them. It was party to test firestorms from incendiary bombing and partly to lower German morale by destroying a culturally significant city. Also, it was to show the Germans British air superiority even in the German heartland.

The bombing of Dresden was part of an entire campaign. Singling it for examination the way that you have makes little sense. Wouldn't you prefer to say that the whole campaign was the large war crime. Or the policies and intent that the campaign was predicated on.
