Switzerland really is the exception that proves the rule:
All these different ethnicities live in different parts of the country. Nobody is forcing the Italians of Tessin into Bern or Zürich or Basel. They all speak their different languages, have their own TV stations and school their children in their own language.
Secondly, Switzerland is very, very strongly commited to its federal model. They sophisticated their politics that revolves around different Kantons making deals with each other under the restriction that they cannot form a pact to the sole detriment of a third Kanton.
And even in that constellation there are grave political differences that make it hard for the country to function. If you look at a map for one of their polling on some initiative you will see that the French and the Germans vote very differently in Switzerland. The thing that holds the country together is that - despite the difficulties - nobody wants to belong to Germany or France so they rather stay Swiss.
They're all white, the sifferent ethnic groups are extremely close genetically, not to mention historically, geographically, and culturally. Ethnicities from within the same racial group easily assimilate or form a new ethnicity.
I know, I don't subscribe to the notion that it's completely without problems either.
But it works, and it has massive potential.

Ethnic legacies are much easier to maintain even with different europeans.
