For a modern event with lots of documentation, I think the question should be: did the holocaust happen according to the original narrative, or were events exaggerated or talked up?
My main issue is that denial of the holocaust is treated as a criminal issue rather than a civil issue.
I think by taking a heavy-handed approach they are setting themselves up for failure long-term.
I'm a bit of a history buff, but don't have any strongly held opinions on the holocaust. It's an aspect of history I skipped over because it was unpleasant.
