Some argue we're in a soft civil war right now. There will never again be an American civil war with two standing armies for either side, it's just not possible. It's more like the pseudo-civil wars of South America, particularly Argentina in the 80's.

You have to ask yourself what the cause would be. Civil wars don't just happen, there has to be a fundamental disagreement, to quote Lenin, of what is to be done. A core issue that divides sections of the country so completely that the state governors would actually convene a response to the federal government and say "we are not going to abide by your orders." Otherwise it's just protests and counterprotests. Violence will escalate, sure. Just like it did in the 60s/70s. But without a reason for states actually splitting off and becoming the other "side", it's just going to be political shitflinging.
I think it's more likely that the executive will just accumulate more and more power until we have our Caesar moment. America is already an empire, people are just afraid to say it out loud.
