Wayne County suburbanite here. You’re looking at things through rose-colored glasses, user. Yes, things are better than they were 15 years ago. But let’s not pretend we still don’t have a declining population in the city, that corruption isn’t still a problem on the city council, that taxes still aren’t business-friendly enough and that crime still isn’t consistently in the top 3 in the nation.
I like the mini-rebirth as much as the next guy but let’s not kid ourselves. Until we start seeing the crime rate go down, no middle class families are going to move to Detroit to create a tax base to cover for all the freeloaders living rent and utility free. Until Detroit can get enough families to move back there, they’re gonna continue to do what they’ve been doing all these years; tax the hell out of the suburbs.
In other words, Detroit will never come back fully until white, middle-class families move back in greater numbers. And they won’t do that until crime is greatly reduced. Everything else is just window dressing.
Explain St. Louis and Baltimore.
Also check the racial demographics of each of those cities. It isn’t a coincidence.
