In the 1990s I remember going online and it being like a portal to America in a way. Its hard to explain it, but everything was American-based, all the culture was American culture.

Back then nobody in my entire extended family, nobody at school, nobody had internet. I only had it because my parents worked in a law firm and had internet there and wanted to have it home as well. The internet back then was literally a non-factor for 95% of Australians, and I'm sure it was non-factor for the rest of the entire world aside from its use in the US.

Everything was based in the US, you could not find any stores anywhere else, all the chatroom's and websites were US based, all the culture was US based. As I said, it was like taking a portal into the US.

I'm always surprised at the number of people posting from non-English-speaking countries.

(PROTIP: all posts from East Asia are expats, but I don't think that's true of the European and Latin American posts)
