Option 1 is “Innocent until proven guilty”: People suspend judgement until sufficient evidence has been adduced proving your guilt. If the accusation is particularly weak, people immediately dismiss it.
Option 2 is “listen and believe”: People believe the accusation and act accordingly. You’re immediately fired from your career. Every friend and family members disowns in, including your wife and children. Your life is essentially in tatters. You can’t rebuild it for there is no redemption for claims of sexual assault.
Now which option would the person making this comment prefer if he was accused? One rule for me but not for thee I imagine. They claim listen and believe is a general principle, whereas in reality it’s an opportune principle. If it can be used to further their own agenda, they’ll use it, but if it were to be one of their own accused then suddenly option 1 is in play again.
