If i was the ATF, which is most likely the agency working on the request submitted by Trump. I would propose adding bump fire stocks to the NFA list. This allows Trump to claim he did something while at the same time not dealing with a buyback program that is extremely unpopular amongst his base. I dont think they would suggest adding to the Machine gun ban, since if you open that can of worms it allows other things to be retroactively added to the ban, ie ruining his support into the 2018 midterm election.

While the brace issue is getting ridiculous, particularly with that one that came out recently that's pretty much an actual stock with some velcro slapped on the side. There's no logical way for bumpstocks to be classified under the NFA currently. You can bumpfire just fine without them. All bumpstocks help with is letting you actually use the stock and grip on the gun you're bumpfiring so that you can do it more accurately.
Reminder that if bumpstocks are machine guns then anything that can be bumpfired is a machine gun, and that isn't just limited to semi autos.

I own one of those $50 bumpstocks. It's a fun toy and I'd never pay more for it, but it actually is incredibly controllable. It works exceptionally well with bipods too.
They're much better suited for a pseudo SAW role than replacing an assault rifle.
