Isn't it more likely that a hard border would create more conflict among Nationalists? Traditional nationalist counties would suddenly find themselves cut from the rest of Ireland, whereas I doubt that anything in Unionists' everyday life would change.

Its similar strategy to how the whites of my Southern state managed to gain power. After slavery was abolished, Blacks were a majority. So militias simply threatened to kill any black person who voted, and rigged the fuck out of the election (there were more votes than people in 1876). They took control of the government than passed oppressive policies, and the Blacks simply couldn't take it and left. Now we are only 30% black.
