Modern day Italians are descended almost entirely from italo-celtic tribes and germanic tribes. Minor greek influences on southern coast that was long ago bred out. And sicilians had a brief occupation by arabs, but they were all sent back. But the greatest part of Italian ancestry is a mix of italo-celt and germanic.
Basically as people migrated into europe, one group turned left and went down into italy (italo-celt) and the other went right and up into germany (germanic)
