There are also three key Senate procedural steps Kavanaugh has to go through to get confirmed by the Senate:
The Senate has to pass a motion to proceed, the first step in opening Kavanaugh’s nomination to the full Senate floor. Lawmakers completed a “voice vote” on this step on Friday.
After at least two days have gone by, the Senate can hold a cloture vote, which will place a limit on how much debate time there will be on the Senate floor for Kavanaugh’s nomination. This also needs a simple majority of 51 votes to pass and can place a maximum limit of 30 hours of debate.
Then there is the final confirmation vote — which again needs 51 votes to pass.

Traditionally in American politics you could kill legislative action with a filibuster. The idea is that you could stall forever and nothing would get done, so if something was going to be filibustered, you either needed a 2/3rds majority to force a vote (cloture) or you could forget about it happening. Theoretically, it's a good thing that prevents a just-majority from doing whatever the fuck they want. And it was mostly okay because politicians picked their battles and would generally be able to work together on day-to-day operations stuff like budgets or confirming appointments.
In practice, the rise of obstructionist politics also increased the use of the filibuster. So, Harry Reid got this idea during the Obama administration that changing senate rules to be able to force cloture with a simple majority instead of a 2/3rds vote would let them force through a bunch of Obama's appointments. And at the time Mitch McConnell warned him that doing it was opening a Pandora's box that would bite them in the ass later. This is the "nuclear option."
In 2016, Mitchboi decided to push it balls to the wall and claim the power to use the nuclear option to force votes on SCOTUS judges. That's what we saw happen today.
