It was unironically the right wing of Australia which removed it. The left and right of Australia has historically been pseudo-socialism vs liberal/low government intervention. The first prime minister in Australia was a socialist. And the white Australian policies were the work of early socialists who wanted to restrict laborers coming into Australia. It was the right wing which said the intervention of government into immigration was unethical, it was the Australian right who dismantled the white Australian policy. Even though today things are a little different, its still largely the right who supports non white immigration. Labor is responsible for the largest uptick in Chinese/Indian immigration we've ever had. They will claim that its great for the market, And their not wrong, turns out if you import the upper class of China for tax cattle you can keep a constant rate of investment and money streaming in. Its really hard to get the facts because they count anyone born here with parents as permanent residents as Australian. Depends on the region, Australia is fast becoming like America which has racial enclaves. There is one area in my city with a Chinese population of 60% adults and over 95% children. The only whites you will find in those schools are the teachers. But then you have other areas of the city which the schools are 99% white.

Its also worth keeping in mind that Australia was settled pretty late compared to other new world nations. Australia looked towards both North and South America to see which methods of settling worked the best. And it was largely concluded that everywhere interracial immigration happened, ethnic tensions existed. I think Brazil was the prime example, it was equally developed to America for a long time, and then failed to keep up with American economic growth, and stagnated. All while having racial tensions and conflict. And Australia learning from all this history and decided against risking it.

What will often happen (and happened to my area) is they will take some working class neighborhood which is very desirable to live in, low crime rates, nice big yards and wide streets. And the houses will cost around 200grand. And then they will import the rich upper-class of India and China to Australia. They will out bid the working class easily, and the housing will go up to 900k-1.5mil within a decade. The working class is completely locked out of its own community, and the politicians call this economic growth. Yes the banks got more money out of it, but its not really economic growth for Australia, its just growth for the bankers and the Chinese.

Its also worth noting that if you invest 1.5 Million dollars into Australia, you get instant citizenship. Which includes property. So what will happen is some Chinese person will come here, deliberately bid upwards on housing until it reaches his needed investment quota, and then get the citizenship.
