Trump did energize the Republican voting base, but nonetheless, if the Democrats had run a moderate Democrat, a huge number of moderate Republicans would have flocked to them because of all the NeverTrump nonsense. I'd also argue that the loss in 2012 taught Republicans a lesson against using "soft" candidates. The constant high numbers of Trump's polling may have been because the people of the party identified him as a rock solid star power candidate and all the other options as conservatives in the same vein as Romney. He also basically destroyed the actual DNC itself by having his cronies in party offices fold their entire fundraising operation into his personal political campaign rendering control of the national party worthless. No one but Hillary could have won because to have any power on the Left now you have to have a political machine which is independently funded and has personnel loyal to you personally, or you have to be in the personal service of some billionaire. The DNC can't do dick for you as a candidate because for all intents and purposes it's a brand new party with a donor list started this decade.
This is why the GOP is better funded right now. It's better funded on paper because Republican partisans can still give money to the Parties institutional power structure. All Democrat money goes to individual candidates, PACs, NGOs, et cetera. There is no point in giving money to the DNC because Obama scuttled it.

Let me make it simple for you: parties are about uniting diverse ideologies. During the Bush era, liberals and libertarians were united in opposition to multiple points of Republican policy. Instead of alienating the libertarians with anti-2A shit, interventionist foreign policy, domestic spying, droning American citizens, etc., Obama should adopted more of a left-libertarian approach to keep the Bush-era liberal-libertarian coalition alive.
