A mentally handicapped boy born in the deep south, befriends a girl and eventually falls in love with her, while the events of the 50s and 60s unfold. The main character curiously witnesses or takes part in almost all major events in American history and culture of the times. Eventually, after having taught Elvis how to dance, fighting and becoming a Vietnam war hero, showing his ass to the president, starting a nationwide marathon group etc. he goes back home to find his mother dying. At the end of the film he meets the son he had with the girl he'd been in love with for his whole life.
It's actually a neat little film but when you're a man who's bitter about women it really seems a tragic tale.

I think the part that got me the most in the movie was Forrest asking if his son was smart.

This movie and Mrs. Doubtfire became two movies that subtly charmed me as a kid and repelled me as an adult. It's the realization the lead women are horrible opportunistic people who disregard the emotions of others for their own validation and somehow get seen as sympathetic characters.
