There wasn't any sabotage. When the fire department went into the locomotive, they turned off all of the electrical systems. This in turn disengaged the "three point" protection that was holding the brakes on... Since air was still in the brake system when the fire department did this, the brakes disengaged and the train was now free rolling... They bottled the air on a whole string of oil cars.

It then rolled into town, derailed and exploded.

The problem was human error due to unfamiliarity.

Protip: If you ever need to immobilize a train, go to the very last car in the string or the front of the locomotive. Grab the air hose firmly and release the air from the brakes by turning the angle cock parallel to the air hose. This will dynamite the air out of the brake system... Engaging the brakes and the string won't go anywhere.
