I have never asked and never had interest in the club. I always saw it as kind of a community meeting point for self important people. From my point of view, the paper, local cops, etc all follow marching orders from higher up agencies. Just like my paper follows the agenda of the corporation. The local level corruption is easy to cover up, being a small town with little over site.

This is one area that is absolutely disturbing. That local corruption, crime, political news scandals etc is depending on a minimum wage reporter tasked with also covering other things. It's hard to change things locally when the prosecutors, police, judges are all friends.

Well, I definitely take precautions. I sometimes meet sources out of state. I have had some sources harassed so I've done this. Most of the time, it's hard to get my research published because of pushback from the paper itself.

Real objective investigative reporting is dying and it's a shame

One story that sticks out is when I heard of a body found in a field. The body was believed to be a migrant worker and I don't think it was ever identified. I tried to make a follow up call about it but nothing new.

One illegal worker was using a fake social security number without any incidence for a few years, but was caught and charged with felony. Good working family man but front page news.

One illegal kitchen worker stabbed a man in my town during a fight in the kitchen, front page.
