What's are some Jow Forums approved truck?

I've bought a new house and need a pickup for occasional use. I'm looking at diesels because I own a 24' covered trailer that I use for moving around one of my cars and a 10' covered trailer for towing scuba equipment. I don't have kids, so I don't necessarily need the super cab version, but I'd prefer the extra interior storage.

My list is as follows:

- Ford F450 King Ranch: Pros: Really nice on the inside. Resale value is okay. Cons: Really fucking hillbilly.

- Hummer H1: Pros: I've always wanted one; goes anywhere. Cons: Overpriced, ugly interior. No bed.

- Ford F650 Super Truck: Pros: I'd never fully utilize it. Is a novelty. Cons: Stupid expensive.

- Dodge Ram SRT10: Pros: Fast. Cheap. Has a bed. Can tow what I need it to tow. Cons: Old. Has viper engine so that could be a maintenance issue.

My budget is about $100k. Ideally, I'd spend less than $50k, meaning trucks over $50k have to be really fucking special. I don't need lending, but I don't see dumping $50k+ on a new truck to be a good decision because of the obvious drop from driving off the lot plus the value after 3-5 years being around half for some models. I would likely finance with an amount down small enough to keep me from being upside down on the truck and large enough to secure financing on a used truck.

What truck do you prefer?

Get a Cummings user

Ford sucks. They have plastic parts in their transmission and a mix of metric and standard stuff because of "made in Mexico."

This. Or a tundra

What do you think about a Toyota Tacoma X-Runner? Great deals on these little trucks! ~$15k on average. The bad part is that nearly all have high mileage.

>X-Runner
No ground clearance.

>- Ford F450 King Ranch: Pros: Really nice on the inside. Resale value is okay. Cons: Really fucking hillbilly.

mexican made shitbox, too expensive for what it is

>- Hummer H1: Pros: I've always wanted one; goes anywhere. Cons: Overpriced, ugly interior. No bed.

extremely heavy, useless offroad, you'll get fucked over for gas

>- Ford F650 Super Truck: Pros: I'd never fully utilize it. Is a novelty. Cons: Stupid expensive.

another made in mexico shitbox, this time with loads of pointless bullshit designed to drive the price up

>- Dodge Ram SRT10: Pros: Fast. Cheap. Has a bed. Can tow what I need it to tow. Cons: Old. Has viper engine so that could be a maintenance issue.

high cool factor but you'll get fucked six ways from sunday for gas

honestly just get a new-ish silverado 2500 4x4, it's more truck than you'll need.

>honestly just get a new-ish silverado 2500 4x4,
This in a fleet vehicle minus all the bells and whistles.

Take it to >>/o/ faggot

What's special about a Silverado? I didn't know Ford trucks were made in Mexico; good to know. I'd like a "Made in the USA" truck, but I'm not going to break the bank on one just because the UAW is greedy.

GMC and Chevy are the same thing right?

Gas isn't a concern; I won't drive it much. The SRT10 looks good, but I don't want to have to replace a $20k viper engine because the last owner never changed the oil

Cumins engines.
Idk , driven lots of pickups , and they just have incredible pull. Feels like nothing .

Toyota tundras are pretty nice too.

Stay away from ford with their ultra thin aluminum body’s you can peel like a sardine can.

Chevy makes a reliable pickup also.

Last I knew, the most American made truck is the Toyota Tacoma.

>I bought a new house
>I'm looking at buying a new pickup, maybe diesel, maybe F-450? For occasional use. Like towing scuba equipment, like literally nigger wtf
You are what's wrong with this country

>not getting a dualie diesel

My 2000 Tacoma has 355,293 miles on it. Needs a new rack and pinion. Replaced a few lights, a starter early on, and a trans at 100k (my fault). A few more years and I can get a historical tag for it IIRC.

I supervisee people younger than the thing.

better quality overall, plus they're a lot more reliable than fords have been recently

yes

the motor replacement won't be too expensive, all it really is is truck parts bolted onto a truck-derived block

Why the fuck would anyone use standard? What a retarded thing to cling to.

Have you looked at the chinese? I discovered Maxus a while ago. Their biggest looks nice and is cheap.

C A N Y O N E R O !

None of the questions you asked include payload or towing cap. You don't need a fucking F450 King Ranch. You want some mall crawler to show off to your buddies. You want a good diesel truck? A 2018 2500/3500 Ram HD can tow 30,000 lbs and has 800 lb-ft of max torque if you get the diesel.

More than enough for your toys.

They are fucked

> of metric and standard stuff
You mean mix of metric and retarded stuff

Ford builds the best truck and that's not up for debate.

dont get an automatic

s-10 or bust

For what you are doing you can get away with a f350 the 6.7 power stroke is a fucking bullet proof engine. They haven’t had any problems to date ford is not a bad truck people here are fucking retarded. source am mechanic

How’s that 40 bucks an hour treatin you?

If you won't use it often enough to justify not renting instead don't waste your money.

You can rent a truck or buy some ragged out oilfield truck for way cheaper

Not worth getting a depreciating asset that won't make you any money that you won't use.

Just get an Isuzu diesel.

You're right. I definitely don't need an F450. They're priced right, which is why I was looking.

The other option I saw was an F250 Platinum.. stupid expensive, stupid features - I'd be upside down throwing $20k down on one of these after about 1yr.

The Ram Limited's are really nice. I think I prefer the interior to the Fords. My old man had a 1995 Dodge Ram that blew up after 20k miles, so that has me a bit gun shy about the Dodge brand. I suppose that's the exception and not the rule, though.

Chevy 2500 high country

>50k truck
>willing to go up to 100k
>financing it
>for occasional use
>lists gaywad trucks
You dumb fucking nigger, get off of pol

So true. This guy spends like an oil field worker who makes 40/hr. Probably lives in a single wide trailer.

I have a 96' F250 with a 7.3 PSD and a manual transmission. I have put straight pipe exhaust with larger downpipe, larger injectors, an electric fuel pump, moderate chip programming and upgraded the zf5 transmission clutch with a solid mass flywheel. It has a 4.10 rear end. I installed some towing mirrors and a back up camera. Should mention that the OSB 7.3 psd's have forged rods and can handle more abuse.
>can pull anything
>OSB body style looks classy as fuck
>has 110k miles
>paid 9k for it and put maybe 4k into it
>no catalytic converter required, no piss water injection

Honestly OP, your best bet is to get an older low mileage 7.3 PSD or a 12v cummins conversion (fummins) when it comes to price vs. reliability vs. performance.

12v cummins are just amazing engines that can build power like no other and are completely mechanical. 7.3 psd is the same as the international engines that a ton of school buses run and they just last forever. Best part about a 7.3 is the engine shuts itself off on low oil level due to the way the injectors are set up. Aside from the occasional bad ICP or CMP sensor, they are bullet proof.

Should mention the 2006 duramax is pretty gud too, but after 2003 you have so much unnecessary bullshit attached to the exhaust system regardless of the make..

24 foot trailer means 3/4 or 1 ton truck.
The Chevys/ GMC ride the best on the pavement and most dirt roads.
I like the look of the Dodges, and the mega cab is nice to have. They'll all be maintenance whores, because diesel trucks are, but you'll be able to pull a house at least.

The "Jap" trucks are built in North Carolina. The "American" trucks are made in Mexico. I'd rather give the wages to North Carolina inhabitants and the profits to racist Japs. Better than giving wages to spics and the profits to the jews.

Attached: 1457675984973.png (500x359, 158K)

I was looking at the '03 7.3's for just this reason.

For some reason, people seem to want a Cessna Citation X, $70,000, rights to your first born, and a mutual guarantee that you will eventually plate the truck in SOLID GOLD.

I can't find one for a decent price.

>toyota
my man
>cheap maintenance
>reliable
>options
i have a 2015 taco. hoping to get me a landcruiser in the next couple years for my longer excursions.

only issue with the new body style 7.3's is the rods are molded and the manual transmission (zf6 I think) has an oil circulation pump cooler set up that adds complexity (zf5 transmission is superior and simpler). The fuel pump system on the new body style 7.3's is just plain better since the mechanical pump on the OSB 7.3's is really a turd and easy to fuck up if you do maintenance on it yourself.

low mileage ones exist, but they are like fucking unicorns. Suggest doing nation wide craigslist searching and be willing to travel.

Or having one shipped

Would really love to have my hands on this. Working up to one

The reason these things are now elephant sized and overpriced

>No Ford Raptor

What the fuck is wrong with you OP

This.
They literally don't make them like that anymore.
They just don't. Not even toyota makes them

only danger here is you really should become familiar with the sound of the engine before hand and listen to a new one in person. If you have a buddy with some tools to connect to the computer, a buzz test and general diagnostic is a good idea prior to purchase. A bad or clogged injector can do damage to the engine over time, you want to verify compression, and you also want to make sure no one changed the dash with a wrecked truck so you aren't buying a worn out engine. This is pretty common practice in the Houston area.
>brother is a diesel mechanic
>he helped me with my purchase and gave me a few tips
Also worth mentioning that on any of the old 7.3's you absolutely should change out the factory air intake to something that seals better and allows the engine to breathe. Factory air intake, especially on the OSB's is complete shit. Forgot to mention in original post.

Extrapolate on this, preferably in total lbs.

I wouldn't buy shit from anywhere that's a flood zone or an auto auction. Not even close. I really don't give a shit what OP buys because he'll probably buy some junk.

Ford didnt take bailout money

This. Chevy or GM. Skip the diesel, they're expensive to maintain.

Don’t know. Don’t drive skips. I’m not a worky. Have yourself a cold beer and go make some things with metal you faggots. I drive a jet black coach and horses with my mind like Dracula.
I’m only fuckin’ with you don’t get upset. Trucks are adequately vehickular.
Get a cool one and fill it with guns.

>mexican/chinese transmission
no thanks lol

If you have a mechanic buddy with some experience, you can sometimes get a good deal and verify if there is any funny business going on. You honestly never know. Up north the risk is salt damage, gulf coast and other areas is flooding, only way to know for sure is to have it looked at by a pro or learn how to look for signs yourself.

I have a '67 porsche 911, porsche 993, subaru gc8 sti imported, and a 2017 subaru sti. I think all are under 2,500lbs

Where do you go to get that serviced? Are parts available in USA?

This man has good taste.
I have a 97 F250 with the 7.3.
I didn't do shit to it though, I just drive it to tow - zero work done. Paid 6500 bucks for it and it had 96k miles on it, now up to 110k.

Mine has a pretty fucked up bed though, the previous owner was a dipshit who managed to hit everything within 100 miles with it apparently.

Why give money to the new car Jew? Save yourself about 45k and get a mid 90s F350 with a 460, it's more truck than you'll ever need.

>Driving a bloated gashog made in mexico that does more damage to the Ozone Layer in 5 minutes that aerosol could ever do
Peak mutt

Cummins guy here. Here's the deal for the used market. There's 4 main generations used by dodge, 3 of which are 5.9L and the last one is 6.7L. The 6.7 is a bored and stroked 5.9 with other modifications.

Gen 1 is the 12 valve 5.9 from 1989 - 1998. It's all analog controls, and is arguably the most reliable diesel ever built for the light truck market in the US.
Gen 2 is the 24 valve 5.9 from 98.5-2002. Also quite reliable, it's similar to the 12V but uses an electronic controller high pressure pump. Most of the failures are electronic.
Gen 3 is the common rail 5.9 from 03-07. The later years had upgrades but they're similar. Because its a direct injection common rail the injectors are very expensive and tend to fail. That being said this is the easiest engine to run a tuner on, makes massive horsepower and torque and is very reliable. IMO the best one to own.
Gen 4 is the 6.7 from 07-18. They're pretty good, but basically because of the EPA they made a high horsepower engine, then choked it to death with emissions crap. Guys who built high horsepower mod commins tent to use the 5.9 not the 6.7.

Full disclosure I own a 02 5.9 24V and a 05 5.9 Common Rail. Both w/ manual transmissions. The auto's tend to fail in the dodges, and IMO is the weak link on the drivetrain.

definatly anything but ford

This being said, for new trucks the eco diesel in the dodge 1/2 ton makes crazy good fuel mileage, and cummins is now building a V8 for Nissan in their Titan XD... which may be my next purchase.

what about 6.7 L with an EGR and DPF delete running stock tune? AISiN 6 speed weak as well? How durable are dodge tucks themselves? meaning the frames and the body and shit?

My dad had the 460 in his dually. There was some warranty work on the engine that needed doing and had ford put a high performance camshaft in it. Truck hauled ass. But I'm sure it got 1 highway 0 city.

Just get a GMC 2500 and call it a day god damn user

The body, frame and axles are bulletproof. From ball joints on the cummins, if running off road, will take a beating. I run Carli ball joints which are a lifetime guarantee on mine. They're a sealed ball joint and run on a cushion of grease basically. Things are huge last forever. Because it's a solid front axle there's less to wear out (compared to chev's independent front suspension), but it handles more like a truck and less like a car because of it.

AISIN 6 speed good? They say 900+ft lbs torque on new ones

Unless you're hauling cars on a wedge trailer just get a regular pickup like a f150 or ram. I don't know why you're considering monster trucks that haul 30000 pounds. You can't even use its full capabilities without a license.

If I had a 6.7 I would do the EGR and DPF deletes. The truck wakes right up. Don't chip the hell out of the 6.7's and they'd last just fine.

I do have a problem with dodges wire gauge in the new trucks. I think this changed when Daimler got out of Chrysler. I've heard lots of stories of broken wires and shit, especially in the doors. IMO the Daimler years were the best build quality on the dodge parts.

I drive a GMC 2500HD western hauler edition and I absolutely love it. Thing is a fuckin tank

Ford is shit get a 79 series land cruiser.

Attached: images.jpg (678x452, 31K)

million mile motor. good choice

Yup they're ok, better than the stock 47RH/47RE/48RE used on the 5.9's. GM's Allison is better IMO

Imagine if toyota came out with a 1 ton cummins diesel truck. Pussy japs will never do it though.

Get gas, For occassional use, Diesel is too high initial and too high maintenence vs gasoline.

Toyota has an awesome diesel for the tacoma's, it's just not sold in the US. The Tundra, I think, is a US only truck, I don't think there is an overseas variant on it (I could be wrong)

Diesels don't depreciate as much on the other hand, so anything you save in oil is more than made up by its resale value. Other than more oil in the crankcase it's actually less maintenance as there is no spark plugs or ignition system. Diesel is typically cheaper too, which you'd have to put some miles on to really matter. But ya, they cost way more upfront.

The Hilux is the best mid-sized pickup made. But it isn't going to haul a car trailer.

>getting into massive debt buying an inferior modern truck
Its like you suck with money. Late 80s built square body or don't bother. You can rebuild the entire truck for a quarter of what a new one will cost. Look for a good frame. I'm a fan of chevy for those cheap parts.

That's all ridiculous. Get a nice used F250 for towing and nasty work for $15K. Get a used Tacoma 4X4 for weekly fun. Spend the rest on dive gear, motocross bikes and snow machines.

Why the hell does anyone buy dodge? I have yet to see a single dodge truck of any age that didn't have significant rust damage. 2-3 years old the the bumpers are rusted in half and so are the wheel wells.

>A 2018 2500/3500 Ram HD can tow 30,000 lbs and has 800 lb-ft of max torque if you get the diesel.

It'll last forever w/ 67K mi on it, won't cost you an arm and a dick. Will do every thing you want it to.

This gentleman knows his light trucks.

>$100k budget for a car

Shiiiieeet. Most of us yuropoors could barely afford a 15k car.

Guy can't afford shit. He is likely just making the payment.

If you own a pickup truck you are a white nigger. Fact.

Dodge 3500. Those things are indestructible

Most of the towing rating has to do with stopping power and the rating of the transmission. Because the 6.7 Turbo's have engine breaking it add's a lot to the towing capacity, and the AS69RC is huge.

That's a nice rig. That diesel is a beast. Bonus feature, you can sleep on the two bench seats.
Get something worn in, that truck has a comfie 67K miles on it for instance. Personally, I'd never spend more than $10K on a towing truck unless it's making money.

>If you own a pickup truck you are a white nigger. Fact.
I'mOKwithThis.jpg

Check out rvsafety.com/towing-guides for more info. You can see what dodge recommends for various years and with different engines / trans / body styles.

As a side note, if you're travelling the interstates a lot I wound't run a 4.10 gear ratio. The cummins is a low RPM engine and it'd get pretty buzzy at 80 MPH. Even my 3.73's at that speed is about all I'd want to push.

>Okay with being a nigger
