Because it would seek to increase their involvement, to destroy and mogrelize all cultures. Look at the US at the beginning vs the US now. You could say the "world government" would resolve trade disputes and inter-planetary defense. But you simply can't trust a government to not grow and overreach.

It would be fucking hard to maintain control over the whole world for a single government. That's all. Corruption will definetely skyrocket. A single world government would be so gigantic and complex that the inefficiencies and bureaucracy alone would implode it. (and that's ignoring real world problem such as corruption, supremacy groups or treason/sabotage)

A good single world government would basically be bare minimal with a very small set of universal rules, and everything else would be delegated to local authorities. But then, what would be the point. Might just have different governments.
