I've seen this happen several times. I can tell you right now the trigger is heartbreak. They'll get really attached to a guy. They don't even have to be dating the guy. They just pin all their hopes on that one guy. Then when all hope is lost, they have that first big heartbreak thing. Usually girls just go through a really sad and angsty time, then move out of it eventually and find somebody else to pursue.
