I think Lovecraftian horror is some of the most boring shit in video games, but I defend it's right to exist.
Eh, most games definitely don’t get it right, and I doubt any will ever manage to capture the essence. Lovecraftian horror is way too abstract to work in any other form than writing.
Then again, Bloodborne was a masterpiece, and definitely got some of its core concepts right.

In all honesty most Lovecraft games/media are complete garbage because they entirely miss what made his work amazing in the first place. Lovecraft practically patented the idea of "cosmic horror", where things are scary because they are so utterly alien and beyond human comprehension. He was able to write this very well into his books because he simply gives a description of the reaction humans have (something we can understand) and how otherworldly everything else is, without going into minute detail and over explaining everything. This doesn't translate well into modern media, where a game or movie must display an image of the enemy that you can understand and give you a way to kill it. Video games are antithetical to the Lovecraftian spirit and the idea of cosmic horror, and no 3D model can ever fill you with the same disgust and fear that one of Lovecraft's stories can.

Not to mention that his stories almost always end with the "good guys" dying or being horrifically mutilated, which doesn't make for good TV or games

i'm still mad at one lovecraft game I played which started out doing the psychological/horror thing, doing it alright, but then suddenly it became a shooter where you rode in the back of a pick-up truck blasting Dagon fish cultists. holy shit it's like whoever did the first bit got fired and replaced by some braindead FPS devs.
Lovecraft is great, though, acknowleding how alien life forms really would be alien and horrifying and pathetic ignorant human monkey meat would shit itself in utter existential dread if we actually made contact with entities capable of traversing the vast, unlit emptiness of galactic space.

I've read a couple of books from H.P. Lovecraft and they're good. I guess, mostly, because you picture in your head what's going on so it kind of sticks with you when you close the book.
But all games that I played related to the lore were pure shit. Boring, generic and not scary at all.

Now I'm playing Icewind Dale 2 (only infinity engine game didn't finished before). Its 16 years old. Main story is about two halfbreeds who wants to create "new world order" which will bring "peace, equality and social justice" for all outcasts and oppressed people - usually raiders, thugs, murderers, primitive races like goblins and orcs, demons and worshipers of evil gods by destroying civilizations of higher races. Their social justice army commits slavery, torture, forceful inter-species breeding and human sacrifices.
Releasing such game now would cause major shitstorm because all liberals would see themselves in antagonist characters
