"The United States is certainly concerned about his whereabouts. Senior officials at the State Department have spoken with Saudi officials through diplomatic channels about the matter. We call on the government of Saudi Arabia to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation," Nauert said.
Khashoggi was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to prepare documents for his forthcoming marriage. His fiancée claimed she waited outside for him for 11 hours, but he did not return. Turkish officials believe the Saudi journalist and dissident may have been murdered.

For years, state media and Syria’s political and religious establishment have demonised the hundreds of thousands of Syrian men who left the country to avoid conscription as even more treacherous than the rebels. In a surprise announcement this week, however, the government said all deserters and draft dodgers who returned to Syria in the next six months would be granted amnesty.
