I would argue that people on Jow Forums are being given the conclusion that "everyone on the left is an NPC" and everyone just goes along with it because everyone else is. This is why I called it hypocritical. Jow Forums is an echo chamber that mirror's "the left" exactly, except one echo being thrown around here is that Jow Forums is nothing like the left, and the people of Jow Forums are free-thinking individuals. This gives people the illusion of it not being an echo chamber, while still having the benefits of an echo chamber (ie. being able to speak your mind amongst like-minded individuals without fear of having your opinions judged, or worse, challenged.)

The NPC meme spawned from a paper indicating that only about 25% of people have an internal "voice" for their thoughts. In other words only a minority of people actually think with language.
Other papers published years ago show that language is one of the reasons humanity was able to do the things its done, since being able to communicate and manipulate abstract ideas is important.
Put the two together and you get only about 25% of people are able to think abstractly, and predominately intelligent people at that. To the extent that most scholars assumed EVERYONE had an internal voice. NPCs are everyone who doesn't have this "ability".

This is something different than the basis for the npc meme. The npc meme is based on a study showing that the majority of people do not have an inner monologue. There is no "third person" voice going on in their head. They experience consciousness in a fundamentally different way than someone who has an aspect of their personhood encapsulated outside their corporeal being.
Someone with an inner voice can ask themselves questions, as opposed to feeling a simple "doubt" compulsion. Someone with an inner voice can mimic an argument with someone telling them something, as opposed to allowing the speaker to dictate the terms of the conversation. Someone with an inner voice can override natural inclinations by talking themselves out of it, whereas someone without one has no inner moderator for their thoughts or behavior.
