It actually did, exceedingly well. Brazil started off as pretty much exclusively an economic venture to grow sugar on plantations. The population was 3-1 black to white in 1700. Portugal was going through a massive population crisis at the time, preachers were giving sermons about towns being desolate because everyone had left for the colonies. They took pretty harsh measures to limit how many people left, so the planters in Brazil needed not just lots of slaves, but lots of mulattoes to take jobs like slave overseers, putting down slave rebellions, and cattle ranching. Mulattoes were important because they could be elevated above the black slaves and take roles that in America would have been held by whites, because we had enough white people.
It was only in the 1800s that the majority of Brazil's white population arrived there, then 'whitening' policies were implemented to bring more. It went from 3-1 black majority to about 50% white, 30% mulatto, 20% African or thereabouts.

This, our injuins were bleached white, those still “red skinned” are just the really ugly fucks no one wanted. Brazil was on the same route as the United States, but besides the bedding of negros, most European stock came from Southern Europeans, so where we in the north would have a Nord, or Celt bed a savage, they would have a Mediterranean bed one.
