You're both correct (and incorrect).
The Soviet Union & communism in general was ORIGINALLY extremely Jewish. Stalin was not supposed to take over after Lenin, a jew name Lev Davidovich Bronstein (you know him as Leon Trotsky) was.
Stalin had a ton of people purged in the 30's but was NOT specifically targeting jews and did not "hate the jews" at that point. After World War 2 howeve, there were a series of falling outs between Stalin and the Jews. The two main issues were:
1) Israel decided to "go with America"
2) Many of the International Jews (former communist leaders) were starting to jump ship to Cultural Marxism which had them focusing their efforts and resources on the US & the West and wielding some of the USSR's power as a tool to accomplish this.
Stalin at this point felt betrayed and began to turn on the Soviet Jews. Before he could completely purge them all he died (in reality was murdered) by them.
After his death they did not wield as much power as they used to, but they were still very much involved in the USSR (which they had already conquered, but were no longer as dominant in) and even more involved in the attempts to revolutionize the West through cultural marxism.
I am (of course) paraphrasing and over-simplifying the story, but the main points should be clear enough.
The USSR was initially very jewish and became less jewish over-time AFTER WW2 mainly thanks to Stalin.

I've been dismissing this as quack nonsense designed to get us to disassociate with potential normie allies, but the more I think back to some of the most fucked up, asinine political arguments I've gotten into with people over the last few years it really kinda makes sense.

People on the left dont really consume news, they just kind of hear shit here and there from comedians and their friends retelling the comedian's jokes.
