Still retarded, Arizona and New Mexico are far more culturally similar to Texas, Vegas is the only part of Nevada that would join up with CA, and Seattle/western Washington would be a part of CA as well.

From the Northwest down:
Alaska would be independent but joined up with parts of Canada (because Canada all of North America would collapse with the US) but they would be increasingly under Russian scrutiny (but too much trouble for Russia to actually do anything). Boom towns form with people joining up with companies trying to drill for more oil.
The coastal region from Vancouver down through central Oregon forms Cascadia which tries to be some eco-friendly Social Democrat republic but ends up being economically controlled by China.
The Northwest beyond the coast forms Columbia which comprises most of the Columbia River area. Decentralized but come together for defense. Full of personal bunkers.
Greater Jefferson forms from eastern Oregon and north California. Ideologically opposed to both Cascadia and California but each prefers it there instead of each other.
The Democratic Republic of California (or whatever that is in Spanish) is mostly the coastal regions from Sacramento down to San Diego. Socialist dump of favelas full of Latinos and blacks and armed compounds where the remaining rich stay. Hollywood and Silicon Valley have fled to Florida and Texas mostly. Economically dominated by China who flood it with cheap knockoffs.
Eastern California and most of Nevada form the State of Sierra and exist by virtue of controlling farms, water, and power. However, the Calis and Nevadans distrust each other.
The Mexican border exists on paper only. The country is split up into various fiefdoms where drug lords and multinational companies battle. Unfortunately this spills over into the non-Rio Grande parts of the border from San Diego into New Mexico and Arizona which have been mostly deserted.
Utah was quickly taken over by Mormons and turned to Deseret. People fleeing the violence in the south moved here but had to conform to the theocracy. Forced to attend "Gentile Temples" where they have to listen to Mormon doctrine.

Any balkanization of the US will result in countries comprised of one or more of these regions.

The Rockies and Plains areas become a very loosely connected coalition of city states connected by rail. Hold most of the oil pipelines allows them a degree of freedom. Taking control of a majority of the nuclear silos helps too.
The Republic of Texas jumped the Rio Grande and control an Occupation Zone in Mexico. Oklahoma, parts of New Mexico and Louisiana get absorbed into Texas.
The Free States of America control most of what used to be the Confederate states except for most of Florida, whatever Texas holds, and far northern Virginia. Created a series of "Free African States" to deal with unruly populations.
The Great Lakes Federation is attempting to bring back the old auto factories and steel mills but after so long it's difficult.
Canada from Ontario on eastward is still technically Canada, but has a large Commonwealth presence. Quebec has been granted provisional independence to keep them quiet.
The United States of America is mostly the Boston-Washington corridor extending inland a few hundred miles. Still claims to control the whole country and holds elections. Heavily occupied by international UN forces. Washington DC has been mostly adandoned as a capitol and declared a DMZ by the US and the Free States to avoid damaging the city.
Several metropolises across the country have been designated "Zero Cities" because they collapse so quickly in the split up that most of the population fled, starved or died in the fighting. Places like San Diego, St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, and Phoenix.

Florida from below Jacksonville down to Miami is still called Florida but is commonly referred to as "Florida Inc." because of the major companies now based there and the corporatocracy the controls it. A safe and stable tax haven for the rest of the continent made them very successful.
Puerto Miami split off from Florida and is slowly becoming more connected with Cuba (to the distaste of pre-Castro Cubanos).
Hawaii is mostly independent but is in a defense alliance with Japan (who wasted no time remilitarizing).

This. Arizona would never willingly be associated with California. We have them by the balls since a lot of their water comes from the Colorodo river, and if we cut that off from them they'd be hurting.
