I've dug fossils up too. I was also one of the grad students on the team that fossilized a fish in two years and also proved sedimentary layers of alluvial silicate can be compressed into "rock" in a matter of years or decades at most, following on from research on a recently volcano affected riverbed.
The methodology is rigorous in terms of counting layers, but the time to form those layers is in serious doubt.

Looks like there was a study done back in the early 90's by Derek Briggs that could fossilize in a matter of hours.

Best starting place is Archaeopteryx Lithographia. I know it isn't really proof as all you will ever see is the photographs. If you hook up with a local rock club or paleontologist group they might have some resources you can see. Most of what you will find for sale or readily visible is going to be a 60-70% skull at best. Any more than that and they get massively expensive.

Solar radiation at the edge of our atmosphere interacts with CO2, creating Carbon-14 atoms.

Plants breath the CO2, and use it to build themselves. Thereafter those plants are eaten by animals who use the Carbon-14 to build their bodies. The Carbon within them slowly starts to degrade into Carbon-12 over time.

Knowing the half-life of Carbon-14, we can look at how much has degraded into Carbon-12 and guess approximately how long ago this organism lived, or how old a layer of sediment is.
