Hitler was injured in WW1 and stumbled into the sights of a British soldiers while hobbling away. The British soldier was a few feet from him and saw Hitler was unarmed and hurt and let him carry on unhindered.

He was promoted to being a runner after fighting in a major engagement in the fall of 1914. He was in a Bavarian reserve infantry regiment that got hurled against a fortified farmhouse in northern France. His unit stormed the trenches without laying down cover fire and most of the regiment was destroyed. Apparently private Hitler and a few others gained the British trenches and fought a close in engagement for the rest of the day to clear them. I'm taking this from a book called "Hitler Ascendent" which is a biography of his life up to 1936.
So, it's likely Hitler killed people up close and personal in the first war.
