"Warning shots" are a good way to go to jail. In many states if you use a firearm when not in fear for your life, it's considered some sort of felony assault. At the very least it's brandishing. Now, in most states having a fun your hands while in your home is not a criminal act, but if you discharge a gun when "not in fear of your life" it is. So, if you shoot, you aim center mass.
