While these efforts were mostly successful in reclaiming Europe, they fell short of reclaiming lands in the middle east. This is mostly due to camels being better suited to the desert, and camels have a smell that terrifies horses, causing the devastating cavalry charges of the west to break before even encountering the enemy as the terrified horses broke formation, making them easy pickings for the brutal desert dwellers.
After King Richard the Lionhearted was kidnapped and a ransom was demanded (which King John begrudgingly paid by taxing England into dire poverty, while Robin, the Hoodlum of Locksley aka 'Robin Hood' said 'don't tread on me' stole the taxes and gave them back to the people) an uneasy peace was made. Europe would keep the lands they had reclaimed, while the Saracens would keep all that they had not reclaimed.
